LC Paper

The origins of LC Paper go back to 1881, when Jean Grelon, the son of French paper-millers, in partnership with the merchant Sebastian Rosal, built the La Confianza paper mill on the banks of the Fluvià, next to an old artisan paper mill.

The construction of this continuous paper mill was the result of the modernization of the paper mills that had historically operated on the Olot-Girona axis. This transformation became the most important exponent of the industrial revolution in the counties of Girona.

In 1960 the factory passed into the hands of the company Emilia Vila, S. A., paper manufacturers from Sarrià de Ter, and in 1968 the Sociedad Papelera La Confianza was formed. Today, now called LC Paper, the factory is widely known for being a pioneer in the development of technology for sustainable paper manufacturing. Since the summer of 2017, it has been producing tissue products with zero CO2 emissions, thanks to the start-up of a biomass plant for the generation of green electricity.

LC Paper. A modern factory

The origins of LC Paper go back to 1881, when Jean Grelon, the son of French paper makers, partnered with the merchant Sebastian Rosal to build the La Confianza paper mill on the banks of the Fluvià, next to an old artisanal paper mill.

Grelon and Rosal made paper until 1910. From there the factory changed hands several times; in 1917 it was rented by Adrià Drou, until 1926, when he moved to the Flores factory in Sarrià de Ter, and Josep Escatllar, a manufacturer from Banyoles, took over until 1959, when he built his own paper mill in Besalú, the Can Surós paper mill.

A year later, in 1960, the factory passed into the hands of the Emilia Vila, S.A. company, paper manufacturers from Sarrià de Ter; in 1968 they formed the Sociedad Papelera La Confianza, now known as LC Paper.

Although the initial production of the old La Confianza factory, at the end of the 19th century, was mainly destined for the manufacture of kraft paper, with a daily production of 1,000 kg of paper, today the LC group specifically manufactures tissue paper for hygiene products and kraft paper for bags, packaging and tablecloths, and its annual output is more than 50,000 tons.

The commitment to sustainability

Since its inception, the company has not stopped evolving and modernizing to adapt to new times, in terms of the products it manufactures and technology and energy consumption. But what really characterizes the company’s philosophy is the commitment to sustainability throughout the production process, a philosophy that comes from the hand of Joan Vila and the team that took over the second generation of the business in 1981.

LC Paper has become a world leader in the manufacture of sustainable paper, with lower energy consumption, water and cellulose, and also because it pursues the goal of producing the energy it consumes.

The race for sustainability began with the installation of a paper recovered by dispersion treatment plant in 1973. In 1989, the water treatment plant with physicochemical treatment by decantation and biological treatment with activated sludge was built with a machine to thicken the sludge.

In 1993, a power generation plant with cogeneration technology was inaugurated, which was expanded in 1999, designed to reuse the steam resulting from the process to dry the paper.

Since the summer of 2017, LC Paper has been able to manufacture tissue paper products without CO2 emissions, as a result basically of the commissioning of the biomass boiler, which is fed by organic waste from the clearing of nearby forests and that allows the generation of renewable energy without associated emissions.

The production of the plant, however, is not enough to cover all the electrical energy needs of the factory. The rest of the electricity is purchased only from certified renewable energy suppliers.

However, the construction in the immediate future of a photovoltaic park on the land adjacent to the plant will bring the company even closer to its goal of being 100% self-sufficient.

This park will consist of more than 8,500 solar panels that will cover about a third of the total electricity consumption of the plant and will represent an annual saving of 1,680 tons of C02.

The result of this commitment is a long list of awards and recognitions that LC Paper has won in recent years.

Visitor and interpretation centre

In 2019, the group of companies that make up LC Paper bought the old building complex of the La Confianza factory with the aim of creating, among other uses, a visitor centre for explaining the history of the company. This building, from 1881, was in use until 2009, when the activity was moved to the current factory.

Various historical objects and documentation, as well as parts of the old paper-making machinery, are on display in the visitor centre. By contacting the company, free of charge group visits can be arranged, by appointment.
